A legal dispute has emerged over alleged copyright infringement involving the CGI creation of a housefly in two Indian films. Sai Korrapati, producer of the 2012 Telugu blockbuster Eega, has issued a legal notice to the makers of the newly released Malayalam film Lovely, accusing them of replicating the visual design of Eega’s digitally crafted fly.

The notice specifically targets the visual effects team behind Lovely (3D), which premiered in theatres on May 16, 2025. While the film included a Telugu-dubbed version, it failed to generate momentum at the box office. The project is currently available on Amazon Prime Video, though only the 2D version is streaming with English subtitles.

Director Dileesh Karunakaran, who helmed Lovely, has publicly refuted the accusations. He asserts that the film’s computer-generated imagery was developed independently, backed by technical documentation that, according to him, proves the originality of the project’s VFX.

As the legal conflict intensifies, the matter is expected to proceed through the judicial system. The claim centers on similarities between the CGI fly used in Lovely and the animated character from Eega, a film widely recognized for its innovative visual storytelling and directed by S.S. Rajamouli.

Both parties appear firm in their positions. While Eega’s team insists on intellectual property violation, the makers of Lovely remain confident that their work stands on independent creative ground. The legal process is expected to clarify the legitimacy of the claims in the coming weeks.
